Federal Government Prepared to Deploy Dozens Government Officers to San Francisco
The Trump administration was preparing on Wednesday to dispatch scores of government officers to the northern California for a significant immigration enforcement operation, sparking criticism from state officials.
Information of the Mission
Specifics of the mission were gradually becoming clear, but it will allegedly feature more than 100 government officers, based on information. The agents are scheduled to begin using the Coast Guard facility in across the bay, facing San Francisco. It remained unclear whether military personnel would join the operation.
Official Reaction
The deployment comes after months of warnings by the president to take action against the liberal city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom condemned the action, labeling it “right out of the autocrat's manual”.
“He dispatches masked men, he deploys Border Patrol, he deploys ICE, he generates concern and apprehension in the neighborhood so that he can claim credit for handling that by deploying the military forces,” he declared. “This is exactly like the firestarter putting out the fire.”
Local Readiness
San Francisco is the latest metropolitan center singled out by the administration's initiative of widespread apprehensions. The operation is expected to trigger a showdown between the administration and city officials who have pledged to stop militarized immigration enforcement in the city.
San Franciscans have been preparing for months for Trump to fulfill ongoing warnings to dispatch personnel to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was equipped.
“For months, we have been anticipating the chance of a potential national intervention in our city,” declared the leader, adding that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “bolster the city’s protection of our newcomer populations, and guarantee our agencies are coordinated ahead of any federal deployment.”
Judicial Framework
Despite court battles to deployments in a number of cities, including Illinois, Oregon and Los Angeles, Trump has claimed “absolute authority” to send the military forces in cities, pointing to the Insurrection Act which allows presidents limited power to send forces on American territory.
Local Preparation
Newsom, who previously served as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to take action “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the federal government can dispatch personnel into our cities with no justification grounded in reality, no supervision, no responsibility, no respect for state sovereignty – it represents an infringement on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.
Public associations, including civil rights groups formed in the previous presidential term, have prepared to quickly mobilize a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.
Local Impact
In San Francisco’s Mission district, a predominantly Latino community, elected official stated to media last week she and her constituents had been bracing for this time. “The point that workers cease employment, when people of color are afraid to go outdoors without the apprehension of government officers discriminating against and detaining them, the moment when parents stop sending kids to school, become too afraid to go to the food market or doctor,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a closure the extent of which we haven’t seen since the pandemic.”
State Troops Situation
Approximately 300 out of 4,000 California state soldiers stay under federal control under an directive from Trump. About several hundred of them had been dispatched to Oregon, where they were waiting in limbo in the midst of a court case over their deployment.
This time, Newsom said he had requested the California national guard troops under his control to staff distribution centers amid the administrative stoppage.
